In Box Series....and Stained Glass Series by Susan Lenz

This blog was originally supposed to document all my "In Box" series pieces. I can't keep up with this idea....especially since the series spawned a related series, my "Faux Stained Glass" pieces. I now have representation at the prestigious GROVEWOOD GALLERY on the grounds of the historic Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC; and at City Art here in Columbia, South Carolina where my own gallery/studio called Mouse House also sells these artworks.

This blog is now a "tool"!
This is a place to show available artwork, ideas for commissions, and size/shapes/prices of various series to interested clients wishing to purchase work directly from me.

This is a place to hopefully attract gallery representation. I'm really, really interested in developing lasting relationships with art galleries in other parts of the country.  The prices listed are RETAIL.  I do not sell for less than the galleries representing my work.

Click the links below for artwork available directly from Susan.

If anyone reading this blog post has a question, just leave a comment or email me privately at either mouse_house@prodigy.net or susan@susanlenz.com!  Use either email address to order my artwork.  I accept major credit cards through my business Mouse House, Inc., 2123 Park Street, Columbia, SC  29201.  My business telephone number is (803) 254-0842.  Mouse House is open Monday - Friday from 9:30 AM until 5:00 PM and most Saturdays from 10 - 2.

WINDOW SERIES or ... "small, stained glass"

(Above:  Window CXCIII.  CLICK ON ANY IMAGE TO ENLARGE! Each piece is layers of polyester stretch velvet fused to recycled, black industrial felt.  Strips of sheer chiffon shift and add colors. Then, each piece is free-motion machine stitched with 100% black cotton thread.  Next, holes are melted through the layers using two sizes of soldering irons.  Finally, the work is subjected to the intense heat of a heat gun which melts away the felt that is between the polyester velvet shapes.  Because the thread is COTTON ... a natural that doesn't melt ... the shapes are held together.  Everyone asks about the "fringe".  What is it?  Just excess melted felt stuck in a line of stitching!  Each framed work is just $265 plus South Carolina sales tax and shipping.  I charge exactly what FedEx Ground charges me plus about $5 for the box ... basically, I round up to the nearest sensible amount which is close to $4 to $5.

Large Stained Glass Series

(Above:  Five large "Stained Glass" pieces in frames ... leaning against a wall here at Mouse House, Inc. in Columbia, South Carolina ... my business!  Most of these are not longer available but the photo is a good one to show size ... which is 62 1/2" x 22 1/2".  Each piece in this series is $1200 plus tax and shipping.  Due to the size, shipping requires a crate and costs start at $150 ... but these pieces are well worth it! Click on image to enlarge.)

(Above:  Here they are again ... from the other side ... and before they are completely framed.  Here, the artwork is only in the black linen liner. Click on image to enlarge.)  These photos are probably not of pieces currently available directly from me at Mouse House.  It is very difficult to keep up-to-date with this blog.  So, feel free to contact me for information/images of work that is current.

Lancet Windows

(Above:  Eight Lancet Windows, framed at Mouse House shortly after they were created.  31 1/4" x 11 1/4".  Retail price $395.  Click on image to enlarge.)

The Lancet Series is named for the traditional, narrow windows found in many medieval fortresses.  These were the openings in thick walls that prevented arrow penetration from raiding armies.  They looked like lances ... hence ... Lancet Windows.  The above photo was taken at Mouse House, my business here in Columbia, South Carolina.  They are sitting on another series of framed artwork called Decision Portraits.  I like the photo for better showing the sizes of this series.  Below are several pieces that may or may not be currently available.  It is rather difficult to keep up-to-date on this blog.  Feel free to contact me for information/image of work currently available at Mouse House.  Each Lancet Window is $395 plus tax and shipping.  I accept all major credit cards.  To order or ask additional questions, please write me an email message at either mouse_house@prodigy.net or susan@susanlenz.com.  My husband Steve and I can also be reached on the Mouse House business telephone, (803) 254-0842.  Mouse House is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 - 5:00 and most Saturdays from 10 - 2.

Lunette Windows

(Above: Lunette I and Lunette II. Framed: 23" x 29".  Click on image to enlarge.  $495 plus tax and shipping.  These two pieces are no longer available but are shown as a good example of how they look framed ... and leaning against a print cabinet here at Mouse House!)

The Lunette Windows are the newest of my faux-stained glass fiber pieces.  They were created in response for a horizontally oriented artwork.  Each piece is stitched to an off-white, acid free mat board and framed with a slightly distressed, 1 3/4" wide black picture framing moulding with a distressed gold lip.  The depth of this moulding is an impressive 1 3/4".  Black "walls" are fitted into the lip of the frame to create dramatic space between the Plexiglass/glass and the fiber artwork.  These pieces may or may not be currently available because it is hard to keep up-to-date.  Feel free to contact me for information/images of Lunette Windows currently available at Mouse House.

Large "In Box Series"

(Above: In Box CLXXI.  Inventory # 3339. Framed:  33 3/4" x 21 3/4". $550 plus tax and shipping.  Click on image to enlarge.)

I love making these colorful pieces!  Each one is an abstraction of an imaginary city seen from an aerial perspective.  This concept reflects my admiration for Friedenreich Hundrethwasser's amazing Vienese condominiums.  My fiber cities are unique because every dwelling/box is decorated to reflect the unique, creative individuals who reside there.

The large "In Box Series" pieces are stitched to a piece of off white acid-free mat board and mounted into a 1" black linen liner and placed into an exterior frame.  Glass is positioned between the frame and the liner assuring that it never comes into contact with the artwork.  The retail price is $525.  These pieces are wired for vertical hanging but can be rewired for a horizontal presentation.  All of these pieces are actually sold.  I'm working on more and can always take a commission, including custom sizes.

Just for the sake of variety, my husband Steve put two large "In Box" series pieces into off-white linen liners.  They are a little further below.  (Yet, any of these pieces can be switched ... off-white to black or black to off-white!  Just let me know!)
